Day 22: Astorga - Foncebadón

Today was the first day that we truly felt we were not alone on the way. There were four more people walking the same stage we were doing. Plus, there was a dog that we found not far from Astorga and that followed the pilgrims. One by one, he escorted each pìlgrim for a little while before moving along to the next one. Many times we found him behind us, walking silently as if he was our shadow.

This was a very good day to walk. The weather prediction was of rain after midday, but as we were getting higher and higher instead of rain it started to snow a few kms before Rabanal del Camino. After this point, we started seeing snow accumulated here and there, until we reached the point where we were walking in 10-30cm of frozen snow. And the scenery was beautiful everywhere we looked.

Later that day we arrived at Foncebadón, where we decided to stay at the albergue Monte Irago. It is a nicely renovated albergue runned by friendly people. We asked for bocadillos (lomo y pechuga de pollo) for lunch, and let me tell you.. best bocadillos yet! The experience was so good that we repeated it for dinner instead of getting a menu.

After dinner we chatted a little bit with the hospitalero, who shared some stories about peregrinos he met, both at the albergue and on the camino. There were some funny stories to be told!
